For a small farm we had a lot of excitement last week. Smokey had a tumor on her forehead removed and Nugget laid her first egg!
Smokey had a bump on her forehead that the vet drained last summer. It filled up again before her next annual visit to the vet and it was drained again but this time it refilled fast. We feared it could impact her vision if left untreated. Pictures were sent to the vet and surgery was scheduled right away.
Smokey was a good patient and is making a great recovery. Here she is post op being attended to by our little Dr Daisy (promoted after taking such good care of our moms this past year). The vet gave her long lasting pain and antibiotic injections as well as dis-solvable stitches so she shouldn't have to return to the office. She hasn't missed a meal and continues to make her rounds around the property as if nothing happened.
Just days after Smokey's surgery, our little rescue chicken laid her first egg! There was lots of commotion in the chicken run earlier in the day. Ryan ran up to ensure no predators had made their way inside but didn't look inside the coop. We can only guess the commotion was the Ladies celebrating Nugget's first egg. Typically the first egg is small, but it seemed pretty big to me considering Nugget isn't very big herself. We're very proud of our little girl and her first egg.
Sometimes I wonder what we got ourselves into, but watching the animals recover and grow brings me so much joy. I can't imagine what else I'd rather be doing.
