It's a cruel, cruel summer

Leaving me here on my own

It's a cruel, cruel summer

Now Mellow Yellow's gone

It's been a brutal summer, not only did we lose Mellow Yellow due to complications that come with age but we also had a massacre in the barn resulting in the loss of our remaining Bantam chickens.

We were warned that raising chickens can be brutal and this summer went out of it's way to showcase the struggles with keeping chickens healthy and safe. We are grateful to the staff at VEG ER for Pets in Brentwood for all they did to help us and keep Mellow comfortable until the end.

As for what got into the barn and killed Ruth, Maple, Edith, and Mary, we may never know but it was smaller than a raccoon and vicious. We hope they didn't suffer long and I'm lucky to have friends willing to help me clean up through the tears and heartache.

In some good news, we were able to rehome another chicken with us. Meet Amethyst, an easter egger that lays the most beautiful blue eggs.
